Why Hire a Stylist?

Many people wonder what are the advantages of hiring a personal stylist when there are style subscription services, store sponsored personal shoppers, Pinterest,  and books/information online.  I’m going to break down the advantages of how hiring a stylist saves you time, frustration, and money in the long-run.

1. Independent and non-biased

A stylist that is hired independently makes absolutely no commission (at least for Status Image Consulting).   Whereas for example, personal shoppers at Nordstrom make commission of of the products they promote and sell to you.  The whole point of a stylist is to achieve third party feedback when you are doubting if something looks good.  A sales person is more likely to say something looks good just to sell it and does not have your best interest in mind.

Another advantage is that an independent personal shopper is not limited to one store or particular brand.  We’ll find the absolute best option for your shape and style.

2.  Consistent help

We help you at every step of the style cycle.  First it’s important to build your foundation with a wardrobe edit.  No other option allows for someone to come into your home and edit everything that you currently own.  From there, gaps are identified and your stylist (who now knows your fit) can select items that they know will fit and match your personal style.  This allows you and your stylist to build a rapport that lasts many years to come.

3. Experienced and trained

I recommend searching through Yelp reviews and stylist portfolios to make sure you select an independent stylist that has experience and professional training.  There are a lot of people who can dress themselves and have awesome personal style, but that does not necessarily mean that they have to ability to style you.  This applies to both store employees and novice independent stylists.  I’ve been styling full-time for over 8 years and I can promise you that even with my training when I started I am a much better stylist today than I was 8 years ago.  Long-term experience paired with training and consistent education (your stylist has to keep up with the times too) makes for an incredibly talented stylist (of which the term image consultant should be used — they understand how to complete the whole package and create your personal brand rather than put together a few cute outfits).  Our work speaks for itself; our clients have to be happy.

4. Save money

How many items are hanging in your closet with tags?  What percentage of your clothes have you worn more than just a few times?  If you don’t wear your clothes you’re wasting your money.  There’s a little trick that many use called cost per wearing.  Let’s say something is a bit more expensive, but you wear it 3-4 times a month for a few years, then it more than pays for itself.  More so than the cheapie Forever 21 you bought for $40 that you only wore once.  I tell my clients that everything in your wardrobe should be a “go-to” item.  It’s something that you know looks fantastic and you have no doubts about it.  If everything looks that good you don’t need a lot of clothes and that means you spend less.  Trust me!

5. Save time and frustration

If you spend more than 10 minutes figuring out what to wear for the day, you are wasting your time.  No more changing items in the morning because you’re unsure.  With a professional stylist you will know what works and how to wear it.  Think of all the stress that relieves!

How much time do you spend shopping online or in stores?  There are those who buy things, then return them because they second guess themselves or end up not really liking what they purchased.  Imagine spending the time buying it, then you have to go back (or repackage and send it) for nothing.  A personal shopper/stylist does the shopping for you — all of your time is spent selecting from items that were specifically chosen for you.

6. Convenient

We work around your schedule and we’re here if you have any questions.  We can go to you or meet you at the mall, whatever is best for you and your schedule.  We are on call and provide ongoing support.  Have an upcoming event and need something?  We’ve got you covered.
